The series consists of records of John A. Griffin, an Executive Director of the Southern Education Foundation, from 1959-1979. Also included in this series are records of the Southern Education Foundation itself. The records consist of reports issued by the Foundation concerning the issues of teaching, early childhood education, and adult education. Other Foundation materials include records documenting the activities of their interns from 1971-1973. In addition, the series contains records Griffin collected from his outside activities such as attending conferences and working with organizations such as the Southeastern Council of Foundations.

The Southern Education Foundation is the result of the consolidation of four successful foundations: the George Peabody Fund, the John F. Slater Fund, the Negro Rural School Fund, Inc. (also known as the Anna T. Jeanes Foundation), and the Virginia Randolph Fund.
